English III – English Language and Education
Prerequisites
In order to do well in the course students must already have an intermediate (or advanced) knowledge of the English language.
Objectives and Content
The aim of this course is to prepare students for the individual study they will need to do in their subject area where most source material is in English. Writing an Academic paper on a subject related to Primary education is the main focus of the course.
Some broad topic areas for the academic paper are listed below:
Different Reading Teaching Methods and their Effect on Reading Development; Dyslexia; The Multicultural Class; Teaching Arts and Crafts, Music, Mathematics or any other subject; Introducing Students to Reading Literature; Creating and using a Class Library; Computers in the Classroom; Home Schooling; Distance learning; Teaching Critical Thinking; Information Overload; Dress Codes in School; Parent-Teacher Relationship and its effect on children’s school performance ; School Violence; Psychological Support to students who face various problems . In other words , the topic of the academic paper can be anything that has to do with primary education. However, it should be narrow enough in order to be covered in the limited number of pages required.
The Academic paper should be around 5-6 pages long (it can be 2-3 pages longer but not shorter than 5 pages) preferably in Times New Roman or Calibri size 12 on a subject of the student’s own choice in the field of Education. Reading carefully the document: Writing an Academic Paper is highly recommended.
Assessment
Students are expected to write their Academic paper in consultation with the teacher.
The final grade for the course will be based 60% on your Academic paper, 20% on its oral presentation to the teacher and class and 20% on your answers to the lecture : How we should Educate Today's Children .

There will not be a final exam.

Note
Students who cannot, for any reason, write an academic paper and still want to take the course, they should show proof ( certificates/diplomas)of their Intermediate, Advanced or Proficiency knowledge of English. Students who have an FCE are advised to write an Academic paper or answer the questions on the lecture: How we should educate Today's Children.if they want to receive a mark above the passing grade (5) for the course.
