The aim of this course -apart from focusing on the definition of the constituent parts of medical terms, proper spelling and pronunciation, comprehension of medical and layman’s terms, homonyms, homophones, words easily confused, idiomatic expressions and mythonyms related to the different body systems- is to enhance the students’ medical communication skills, relevant vocabulary and concepts and master the art of writing clear and concise medical reports and documentation. Students learn to develop techniques for conducting effective and empathetic patient interviews, to gain the ability to read and interpret complex medical records and literature, to take medical history, to perform physical examination and to convey medical information effectively in both written and spoken forms.

This course is designed to introduce students to the language of medicine and medical terminology. They will acquire the rules of word formation, which will enable them to understand the meaning of medical terms and help them understand professional medical texts during their study. Emphasis is given on the definition of the constituent parts of medical terms, on their proper spelling and pronunciation as well as on the comprehension of medical and layman’s terms, homonyms, homophones, words easily confused, idiomatic expressions and mythonyms related to the different body systems. They also learn about the history of medicine and ancient Greek Medicine.
