The aim of this course is to familiarise students with the language of Architecture and the special terms used in spoken and written academic texts in order to help them develop the skills needed for the comprehension and production of academic discourse. It focuses on developing grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and style in an architectural context so that academic and socio/cultural assimilation can easily occur. Students learn to develop spoken English skills for social and academic spoken interactional contexts, such as seminar discussions, oral presentations, group work discussions, and informal conversations.

This course is designed to help students develop competence and awareness of Academic English in order to successfully develop skills and knowledge in academic writing, to develop strategies for reading academic texts in English in order to exploit key text content for further study purposes including written work, seminar discussion and oral seminar presentation. It also aims at introducing note-taking skills and extending this into summarising of key ideas from written and oral architectural texts, raising awareness of academic lecture structure and the strategies required in order to follow and understand lecture content, lecturer behaviour, and lecturer discourse choices.
